மகன் தந்தைக்கு ஆற்றும் உதவி, ‘இவன் தந்தை என் நோற்றான் கொல்’ எனும் சொல்.
பொழிப்புரை :
மகன் தந்தைக்குச் செய்ய வேண்டிய உதவி, ’இந்த மகனைப் பெற இவன் தந்தை என்ன தவம் செய்தாரோ’ என்று உலகம் சொல்லுமாறு செய்வித்தல்.
	புதிய மாறுபட்ட கருத்துக்கள் இவ் விளக்கங்களில் உள்ளன.
விரிவுரை :
ஒரு மகன் தன் தந்தைக்கு செய்யக் கூடிய உதவியானது, ‘இந்த மகனைப் பெற இவன் தந்தை என்ன தவம் செய்தாரோ’ என்று ஊரும் உலகமும் மெச்சும்படி சொல்ல வைப்பதாகும். அவ்வளவே! ’இந்த மகனைப்பெற இவன் தந்தை என்ன தவம் செய்தாரோ’ என்று எல்லோரும் மெச்சும்படி என்றால் அவன் அனைத்துக் காரியங்களையும் செய்தாக வேண்டும். பெற்றோரைப் பேணுவது, சமுதாயத்தைப் பேணுவது, நல் வழியில் நிற்பது, நற் காரியங்கள் ஆற்றுவது, இல்லறம் ஓம்பி நன் மக்களைப் பெறுவது, பழிக்கஞ்சி வாழுவது, புகழ் தரும் காரியங்களை ஆற்றுவது, உயர்ந்து நிற்பது என்று அதில் அனைத்தும் அடங்கி விடும். அது, தனது பிறப்பிற்குக் காரணமாகி, அன்பையும் அறிவையும் ஒருங்கே தந்து, தன்னை ஆளாக்கி மனிதனாக்கிய தன் தந்தைக்குக் காட்டும் கைம்மாறு அன்றில் நன்றி கூட இல்லை முக்கியமாக ”உதவி” என்கின்றார். கைம்மாறு என்பது கடனே என்று திருப்பிச் செய்வதாகிவிடக் கூடாது என்பாதாலே உதவி என்றார். அவ் உதவியின் பால் கிட்டும் நன்மை தந்தை வழியாக, குடும்ப நற்பெயராக மீண்டும் உன்னையே சாரும் என்பது நுட்பம். அது மகனிற்கும் அவனது வாரிசுகளுக்கும் நீண்ட நிலைத்த புகழை நவிலும். தந்தை, தாயின் வளர்ப்பிற்கு நன்றி தெரிவித்தல் தான் இயலுமா? பெற்ற கடன், வளர்த்த கடன் என்பவை தீராக் கடன்களே. இவ் வாழ்வு முன்னர் சொன்னதுபோல் அவரவர் செய்த முன் வினைகளுக்கேற்ப அமைந்ததே. எனவே அவற்றில் சில உதவிகளை மட்டுமே இவ்வாறாகச் செய்து அதிலும் தானே பயன்பெற இயலும் என்பதும் சொல்லப்படாத மறை பொருள். கணக்குத் தீர்த்தல் என்றால் பெற்றோருக்குத் தான் பெற்றோராகும் ஒரு வாழ்வை வாழக் கிடைத்தால் மட்டுமே இயலும். எனவேதான் பெற்ற மக்களிற்கு தந்தை தாய் பெயர் சூட்டி, அவர்களின் பெயரன், இன்னாரின் பெயர்த்தி என்று சொல்லி, பாவித்து வளர்க்கும் விதத்தைக் கொண்டார்கள். அவர்களின் வளர்ப்பில் தாய், தந்தைக்குச் செய்யும் பணியாய் நினைத்து ஒழுகி அவர்களும் இதை உணர்ந்து தொடரும் வகை செய்தல் வேண்டும் என்பதே வளர்ப்பு முறை ஆகும். தென்புலத்தாரை, மூதாதையரை நினைந்து மக்கள் தெய்வமென வணங்குதலும் இத்தகைய காரணங்களுக்காகவே. எனவே தந்தையையும், தன்னையும், தன் வாரிசையும் புகழ வைக்கும் ஒரே வழி, நல்ல மகன், குடிமகன், சான்றோன் எனப் பெயர் எடுப்பதே. உலகம் உங்களின் செய்கைகளைக் கவனித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது என்பது அறியாதார் இதன் மூலம் அறிய வேண்டியது.
குறிப்புரை :
தந்தைக்கு மகன் செய்ய வேண்டியது எல்லாம் நல்ல பிள்ளை என்று பெயர் எடுப்பதே.

Meaning :
The help a son can render to his father is to make the society to ask "What penance the father made to beget such a son"

Explanation :
A son's help to his father could be only to make the people to ask "What penance the father did to beget him as the son". If the society has to say that, son must have possibly done all the good things. Taking care of parents, maintaining good name with the society by doing all good works, adopting good principles, performing worthy works, living a good family life and nurturing good kids, living with care for the good name, doing only the good things praised by others, living tall and larger etc. all will be under that. Valluvar even does not say that it as a mere duty by the son to the father, instead he says that it as the 'help' a son can offer to his father. He said so as only 'Help' so that the thanks returning or performing duty by the son should not be a simple or mere ritual. Such help is going to come back to the son only through his father, as goodwill for the family. That is the hidden message. Such goodwill will long last for him and his offspring. Is it possible to give the thanks for the parental raisings? The parent’s contributions such as birth given, rising all will ever stay as unfulfilled debts. As we had seen earlier, each one's life is because of their prior deeds. Therefore one can do only these kinds of fewer helps and also benefit from it once again for self. This is the message of this kural. Settling account dues to the parents is possible only by another life wherein if at all one becomes the parent to them. That is the reason in our culture they keep the parent's names to their offspring, at least to get the benefit of calling their own children with their parents names. In children upbringing and naming them after parents they found the way to thank the parents. It is appropriate for the parents to teach this noble way to their offspring to continue this legacy. It all the same reasons that the practice of worshipping and remembering the forefathers and grandparents exists. Therefore to get goodwill to the father, to the self, to the offspring and to the family, only way is to get a good name for self as a wise, a noble and a good citizen. Those who do not know that you are watched by the world at large understand it through this.
