தினைத் துணை நன்றி செயினும், பனைத் துணையாகக் கொள்வர்-பயன் தெரிவார்.

பொழிப்புரை :

தினை போலும் நல் உதவியைச் செயினும், பனை போலும் கொள்வர் [அதன்] பயனை அறிந்தவர்.

விரிவுரை :

செய்யப்பட்ட உதவி தினை அளவே போலும் இருப்பினும், அதன் பயனை உணர்ந்தவர் அதனைப் பனை அளவே போலும் கொள்ளுவர். எனவே அவ்வுதவியை அவ்விதமாகப் போற்றி நன்றி கடப்பாடுடையவராய்த் திகழ்வர் என்பது உட்பொருள். வெளிப்பார்வைக்கும், பயனுறாதாருக்கும் வேண்டுமானல் அவை சிறு உதவியாகத் தோன்றலாம். ஆயின் அவ்வுதவியின் பயனை உணர்ந்தவர், தெரிந்தவர் அஃது தினை அளவாயினும், பனை அளவாகவே போற்றுவர். விபரமறிந்தோர் அவ்விதம் கொள்வர்; சிறு மதியாளர், அறியாதோர் அதைச் சிறிதென விட்டுவிடுவர் என்பது ஈண்டு பெறத் தக்கது. உதவியின் பயனை உய்த்துணர்ந்து அதன் சிறப்பைப் பெரிதென மதித்தல், நன்றி மறவாதிருத்தல் பயன் தெரிந்தோர் கொள்ளவேண்டிய அறம். பயன் பெற்றோர் எவ்வித உதவியாகினும் அதைச் சிறிதெனச் சிறுமைப் படுத்தாது அதைப் பெரிதாகப் போற்றி மதித்தல் வேண்டும் என்பது உட்பொருள்.

குறிப்புரை :

உதவி சிறிதெனினும் அதை உணர்ந்தோர் மிகப் பெரிதென மதிப்பர்.

Though the help rendered is as small as millet that who knows the benefit will consider it as huge as a palm-tree.

Although the help rendered is as small as millet in size that who knows the benefit will deem it as huge as a palm-tree. For such a help therefore they are obligated to such a great extent is the implied meaning. For the onlooker and for those who have not benefited the help may look it as smaller. But who knows and feels the benefit will consider it as high though it is small in reality. Wise will consider it so; mean minded and un-wise may leave and ignore it as small is also imbibed here. Comprehend the received help, consider and appreciate it as huge and precious and thankful to it are the virtues of the beneficiaries. Also the implied meaning is that the benefited must consider the received help regardless of its real size as great and vast and not to ignore or ill-treat it as mean or meager.
