In English

Non-Covetousness

Thirukkural : 173

Covetousness gets only petty pleasure...

In Tamil

siRRinpam veHki, aRan alla seyyArE
maRRu inbam vENdubavar.

Meaning :
Those who wish the higher bliss will not aspire for petty pleasures of covetous and do any ill things on its behalf.

Explanation :

Those who desire the bliss of liberation will not wish the trifling pleasures from covetous and its ill deeds.

The pleasure coming out of covetous act is trivial. Those wise who wish to gain the high immortal bliss of liberation will not be scapegoat for such petty joys and thus will not do any immoral evil acts.

The implicit meaning is that the pleasure of covetous act is not of the good virtue. That desire of petty pleasure will motivate only to do all evil things. By the illusion of those trivial joys the undisciplined will continue to do the ill deeds and will remain ever deep in the afflictions surrounding them. Ignorant about the root cause for their continuous agony is that the covetousness, they fall into wrong thesis that continuing the small and petty pleasure is the way to get longtime happiness and thus they get engulfed over and over on to ill doings.

How long the pleasure of covetous acts will last? Will the properties acquired through wrong doings give permanent peace? Will it do any good? Not only such properties gets destroyed but also the prior owned properties will also go ruined or otherwise get deceived by someone stronger than the self. Will it be of any good, the pleasure of cheating livelihood of others? Pleasure obtained through deceiving will not stay longer but only will leave the self a greater deceit later. The profit of cheating is nothing but the investment for total destruction.

Only those earned through good virtues and justice can give peace and longer happiness. That which comes out of good virtues is not offensive. Therefore that would only lead one to progressive path without creating any mental perturbation.

The covetousness gives only the pleasure that comes from torturing others through bad acts. Therefore will they ever do the non virtuous act that those who aim for the high bliss of liberation?

Message :
Those who desire the higher bliss will not aspire for trivial joys of covetous acts.

In English

Ashamed of injustice will not do disgrace acts...

In Tamil

padu payan veHki, pazhippaduva seyyAr
naduvu anmai nANubavar.

Meaning :
Those who feel ashamed for unjustifiable acts will refrain from the coveting acts afraid of the despise it brings despite whatever enormous gain it might be.

Explanation :

Those who have shame for unjustifiable acts will never do the coveting acts afraid for the disgrace it would fetch even though it might be extremely profitable.

Though seizing of others property benefits greater or incomparable usage, those who are ashamed of unjustifiable deeds, will not execute it scaring the disgrace it would bring in later is the meaning here.

It is easy to acquire the properties of the poor and destitute and from the weaker people. Especially when their property usage is enormous, generally everybody will be interested to take it over. However, though it is very simple to do so, the people of just and good virtues, those brave hearted who feel ashamed for unjustifiable acts, will never do such disgraceful acts.

The implicit meaning is that than the greater usage of the acquired properties through stealing, deceiving or cheating, the ill and disgrace that brings is more severe. Also such acquisitions are more clearly unjustifiable and non virtuous acts.

It is better to keep no desire at all on the things which come with no cost. Indeed that is the good virtue. All freebies will have expectation strings attached. Many-a- times even avoiding the loving gifts too would be more beneficial.

Therefore covetously seizing and acquiring others property is certainly against the virtues and justice and that would bring endless disgrace and never dying sins. Hence it is not the method or deeds adopted by the wise of good virtues.

So, let us be the follower of good virtues and not the doers of unjustifiable covetous acts.

Message :
Though covetous seizing however extreme beneficial, it is disgraceful, immoral and unethical act.

In English

Non-Covetousness

Thirukkural : 171

Covetous leads to destruction...

In Tamil

naduvu inRi nan poruL veHkin, kudi ponRi,
kuRRamum AngkE tharum.

Meaning :
Coveting others righteous wealth unjustly will ruin one's own lineage and leads to evils there.

Explanation :

Grudging on the un-entitled but others righteous property unjustly, will ruin one's own family descent and lead to evil offenses there on.

Good property of others means the righteous and legally entitled belongings of them. Coveting on others entitled property is offensive ill and can cause evils even after the life.

Illegal encroachment or unrighteous acquisition or easing desires will only ruin the lineage. One's righteous property means it must have been earned in the virtuous manner or inherited through his heritage. The desire to acquire itself is an evil act. Therefore such desire shall spoil and destroy the possessor's family, lineage and his path to salvation and also lead to ill fame offenses.

Like the enviousness, the covetousness also when enters one's mind, it destroys the good thinking and creates all afflictions abundantly. It also creates all bad ideas and spoils all progressive thoughts but makes one to get more attached to the desired object all the time. Because of that it creates negligence in the doing work, loss of job, loss of opportunity, loss of property, continuous afflictions, agony, angry, parting, split and irks in family welfare and subsequent damage and furthers with all annoying evil deeds and finally gets complete and total destruction.

There is a saying that unfulfilled desires make the soul not to rest in peace. Therefore they get reborn they say.

Therefore it is only good and good virtue for one, not to have the desire or extreme greed on others property or covetousness on anything.

Message :
Coveting others righteous property destroys one’s own lineage and furthers the evil deeds.
